Background
Dr Ben Britton is a Senior Clinical & Health Psychologist from Newcastle. He has worked for the past 15 years with cancer patients from the Hunter New England area and in that time completed a Clinical Doctorate and a PhD, both in his special interest area of Head and Neck Cancer.
In 2013 Ben led an NHMRC funded multi-centre trial of an intervention he wrote to prevent malnutrition head and neck cancers undergoing radiotherapy using psychological strategies. The trial, which was a collaboration with the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group, trained existing dietitians in hospitals in Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The trial demonstrated a significant improvement in nutritional status, weight loss and quality of life.
The success of this intervention has resulted in national and international invitations to collaborate. In 2019 he was invited to travel to Connecticut to conduct clinical research with the radiation oncology department of Yale University Medical School.
Ben has more than 30 peer reviewed publications and over $1.5m in research grant funding. He has been nominated and won awards for publications, presentations and research at national and international level. He has been awarded two competitive clinical research fellowships.
Although Ben enjoys research, he has always worked clinically and values the chance to help patients going through some of the most difficult times in their lives.
